The school was established on the 15th October 1964 and officially opened on the 29th October 1974. Phahama was the first high school to be established and operated in the then Madubulaville area. The School was established by the community and Mr. Arthur Sepanya who was pivotal in the establishment of the school. Mr. Legoale was the first Principal of the school, Mr. Ramasia followed as the next Principal and was the first Principal to introduced the school uniform and school logo Mr. Mohlamme followed as next principal, Mr. W P Mabitsela, Mr. SL Montjane, Mrs. VN Mayekiso and Currently, Mr. SC Siko. Phahama Secondary School won the international Eisteddford in Roodepoort through the school Boys choir and toured Germany, England and other European countries in 1981, led by Mr. Sebata Mataboge and Mr. Nicholas Tlhapane The music legacy continued under Mr. S Mohajane and Mr. P Sekati. The school has over those years won many trophies on a Provincial and National level. The school has produced a galaxy of intellectuals, Doctors, Professors, Journalists, lawyers, prominent entrepreneurs, Teachers, Engineers, internationally recognised sport icons Politicians of note etc.. Located in the Rand West City municipality, the school has achieved great success in leaner performance over the past few years, with a notable 97% in 2017, 95% in 2018, 98% in 2019 and with this excellent performance, the school was identified as no. 55 on the top 100 performing schools in Gauteng Phahama Maths, Science and ICT school of specialisation, offers various sporting codes including Netball, Soccer, Volleyball and Basketball. With some of the greatest achievements in Netball, Phahama obtained position 2 in the Dstv National Netball championships for u/14s, Position 5 for u/19s and position 3 for u/17. Tshiamo Molefe represented the school in Italy as one of the Basketball players.
